Audio Systems: power to my amplifier, watt amp, dodge intrepid

Question
i have a question regarding the instalation of my audio system? I connected my kenwood 12 " subs along with my alpine 1000 watt amp to my factory dodge intrepid (2000) radio. But i have to disconnect my power line after use. should i install a toggle switch or a fusable line to the remote input on my amp? and also should i use a compacitor to help from draining my battery or alternator?

Answer
Yes.  You should have two 12v lines connected to the amplifier for the subs.  One is constant and is the high current line when the subs are turned on.

The other 12v line  comes from the ignition or from the head unit to turn the subamp ON.  You can do it manually, of course with a switch mounted anywhere that is convenient for you. It does not carry much current, so can be a small wire.

Using a capacitor will help with the low frequency performance of the amplifier and place a more even load on the battery and voltage regulator of your automobile, but it will not save any drain overall.  You may need an oversize battery and a heavy duty generator if you are sucking up lots of power from the battery.  Please consult some one who has hands-on experience with this level of installation as a one KW amp is a pretty serious installation.
