Audio Systems: install cd player in lexus 300 1997, lexus 300, older cars

Question
My son the genius wants to put a new cd player in his car and is getting ready to buy one off ebay, I told him you can't just buy any cd player, you need to make sure it will fit, he said I can just buy an adapter. Somehow I don't think it is that easy, is it?

Answer
I never recommend buying used equipment off eBay without seeing it first or getting  a certification from the seller that if it does not work it can be returned.

Actually, I cannot think of a used cd player that would be worth it by the time you pay shipping, etc.  They are so inexpensive now days.

And, yes, you are right, unless your son is technically inclined and knows how to refigure the wiring, you should purchase the right unit AND the right wiring harness for the car you are going to install it in.  It is very specific.

I like to use www.crutchfield.com as a guide for what will fit in any given car. Their database is the best around.  If you decide to purchase from Crutchfield, they will send the hook up diagram/instructions and the wiring harness for your car and the unit you purchased.  Here is their site for the 97 lexus:

If you buy an unknown unit it requires knowing the mechanics of the mounting and the wiring of the unit and the car.  You can find many of the wiring schemes for older cars at www.installdr.com (but they have no Lexus diagrams at the moment)  and other such sites.

Good Luck and hope this helps.
