Audio Systems: 94 BMW 540 Left channels out, rca phono, rca jacks

Question
Thanks for the idea, but there are no RCA jacks on the OEM amp.  There are 2 push connectors - a 12 pin and a 26 pin.  I can handle technical, but depinning connectors and creating harnesses would be getting more involved than I care to get.  I'd rather spend the time installing a new system that I know works.  I did find a couple JVC units at Crutchfield that look promising.

Yes, it really is a 540.  I don't see many others on the road - I think the engine was mostly used in the 7 series.

Thanks,

Ben

-----Question-----
The stereo in my '94 BMW 540 (Alpine 2 Model CM5901 head unit) has lost the front AND rear left channels (they are very weak when I turn the balance all the way left).  Is it something on the head unit or the amplifier in the trunk.  Is it an easy fix?  If not, can you recommend a mid range cost replacement with a USB port?
-----Answer-----
You must do some troubleshooting.  Could be the head unit or the amps.  It is easy to find out.  Maybe easiest if you are non-technical is to find the power amps in the trunk; when off, feed a portable radio or cassette or cd player into the inputs; then turn on the amps and see if you now are getting good stereo out of the amps/speaker systems. If not, then the problem is in the left channel amplifier.  If it is okey then the trouble is in the head unit.

Best to got to crutchfield.com and get the list of compatible units that will fit your car.  Then study the specs.

But are you sure it is not a 530i?  I don't think they made the 540 in 94 did they?

Answer
Yes, trust the European manufacturers to use the DIN connector concept.  The newer cars use the rca phono connectors like we do here in USA, but your vintage is still DIN looks like.

And, you are right, making a cable adapter is a pain in the neck.  But, you can purchase adaptor cables.

The above might have something that triggers your imagination.  The Alpine stuff you have is good; too bad to throw it out if you can get it going again. On the other hand the price of new gear is getting cheaper all the time and new features for iPOD and mp3 integration is a good solution.
