Audio Systems: head unit cuts out when volume is turned too high, sony cdx, nissan primera

Question
i purchased the car second hand and the head unit was not included.  did you want to know the make and model of the car?  if so, it is a nissan primera 1.6 lx.  the problem is quite interesting because the head unit will sometimes cut off at different volumes depending upon the song played, but also it will not cut off at that particular volume at the same place within the song all the time.  in other words, what i am trying to say that it is fairly random.  thankyou

hi, my problem is that my head unit (sony cdx-gt300s) cuts out whenever i turn the volume up.  it always happens at around the same volume particuarly with music that has very heavy bass.  what is the reason it is cutting (turns off) and what can i do to prevent this from happening.  thanks

do you only have the cd player or is there amplifiers and subs and stuff like that as well?  does it blow a fuse or does it just come back as soon as the volume is lowwered?  do you see the lights on the cd player dimming to the beat before it shuts off?

Thanks!

the unit does dim before it cuts off.  when it cuts off it comes back on but continues to cut off until the volume is lowered.  i do not have any subs or amps, etc.  i have been advised that it could be to do with the speakers and the probability that they are not able to handle the power that the head unit is putting out.

well, it may be related to the speakers, but not cuz they cant take the power, it's the oposite problem,  they DRAW too much power.  this can happen when a factory bose system is bypassed to use an aftermarket cd player.  What is the year make and model please and did the old cd player say bose on it anywhere?
thanks!

Answer
Couldnt find much on the primera but it doesnt look like they were available with the bose system.
sounds like its simply a matter of not enough amperage to run the unit.  First thing to do is check the ground is good.  you may want to run your own ground by drilling a hole in the body (floor) of the car and sanding all the paint off the surface of both sides of the hole, then put a bolt in from the bottom and crank a nut down on it hard, then use a ring terminal with 12 - 14 guage wire on the stud that sticks up and another nut on top of that, put a little spraypaint over top on the outside of the car to prevent rusting. conect it to the stereos ground and see if that helps, if not the next step is to run new power lines.  Use 14-12 guage wire. run a wire directly to the battery's posative for the memory wire on the cd player (usually yellow) make sure it's properly fused near the battery.  and run a switched line for the cd player (usually red wire) you can get this from the ignition or sometimes the cig lighter or testing around in the fuse pannel with a meter may reveal it as well.  it should show 12-13 volts when the key is switched to the "on" and "run" positions only.

if you run those 2 power lines and ground I'm posative your problem will go away.  if not theres something wrong with the cd player.

Good luck and let me know how it goes.
