Audio Systems: Home theatrer and stereo speakers, home theatrer, sound modes

I am building a contemporary home. 1 large room for tv and stereo. Can I wire
my home theatre rear speakers to be used for sterteo as well when I am not
watching tv so I can have my stereo come from my rear and front channel
speakers in my main room.

I believe what you're asking is if your surround speakers can play the same thing as your front speakers for standard 2 channel sources like cd and such?  If so this is a function of the reciever not how you wire them or hook them up.  If you havent gotten a reciever yet I highly sugest onkyo since they have modes for converting any source (even phonograph!) into psudo surround sound modes and they also have an "all channel stero" mode that plays stereo sources through ALL speakers (center, subwoofer, front and surround etc)  The Onkyo NR1000 is a masterpiece of a unit but if you cant afford $5000 for a reciever the onkyo 803 has most of the same features without all the glam.
