Tips on Buying Cars: transfer the title of ownership of a car, motor vehicles office, department of motor vehicles

Question
I would like to give my used car to my daughter who resides in D.C.. My car is registered in N.J. What is needed to do to transfer the title as well as the insurance. Thanks.

Answer
Wan,

Thanks for your question.  You will need to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles office in your area to transfer the title and the registration to your daughters name.  Your daughter will need to be there to sign the documents as well as the buyer.  Your daughter will need to get insurance in her name if she is going to have her separate insurance policy.  If you are going to have her on your insurance, you will need to make sure that she is listed as a driver on your insurance policy and notify the insurance agent which car will be her main vehicle to drive.  That is all that you need to do to accomplish what you are trying to accomplish.
