Audio Systems: car tv audio, sam ash, wireless headphones

Question
Hi,
I just sent a question and do not know if it sent. I'll be less wordy this time (one fingered typer)
How can I split a TV/DVD headphone audio signal to 4 headsets without losing volume?
This is in a conversion van, 12VDC, permanent mount and wiring would be nice but not essential.
Thanks,
Allan

Answer
Hi,
Good question.  It really depends so much on the headphone output level of your tv/dvd unit.  However, honestly speaking,  most of them are designed only for one pair of headphones. Therefore, the optimum solution would be an external feed amplifier or bluetooth distribution system of some kind.

How about this:

The above is a 4 output headphone amp that is available from many sources for about $50. It is powered by 12 volts, so can be run in the car.

There are similar little boxes from other manufacturers, but this is the least expensive I could find for you.

Here is another one about the same price that will also run on 12 volts.

A good place to look for these locally is at a music store, like Sam Ash.  I don't think the discount stores such as Walmart carries this limited use item, but you should check.

A wireless sytem would be nice so the passengers would not have to be tied up with long cords.  Here is one idea:

This system comes with two headphones and transmitter for about $60.  Buy two of them and you have 4 headphones.

And, this company makes a total mobile solution with overhead dropdown screen and fm wireless headphones, but is on the expensive side:

There are bluetooth systems that are compatible with the iPod and other mp3 players, for example, that will work with the tv/dvd and portable audio players.  Bluetooth is a more expensive solution. You can google for them and find a variety of products.

The nice thing about using a wireless (IR, or FM, or Bluetooth) is you need only one transmitter and you can add as many headphones as you need or want.

Hope this helps you decide the route to go.
