Audio Systems: Subwoofer install, light fuse, mono amp

Question
I installed an 800 watt mono amp and subwoofers to my 1988.  A day or so after I noticed that the tail lights and instrament lights are out.  I replaced the fuses on both. For the tail lights it just continually blows each fuse I put in. And the instrament lights didn't blow the new fuse, they just don't turn back on.  Do you anything I can do to get these lights working agian? Hopefully, with out taking out my audio system.

Answer
Does the fuse go if the entertainment system is OFF?  If it blows the tail light fuse only when the amps are on then it is because the amps are powered from the tail light circuit.  IN which case you should run its own line back to the battery.

You should make sure of the wiring; if you don't have a direct line to the battery for a big amp like that it will surely cause problems.  You can put a separate fuse in the line(s) feeding the head unit and the amplifier.

For the instrument panel there are two fuses in many vehicles and you must look hard to find them. One will be the main box under the hood in the engine compartment.  The other is likely inside under or behind the dash.  Depending on your make and model, it may be in a little box under the dash between the driver door and the steering column OR under/behind the glove box area.

Hopefully no damage has been done to the car system.

In a worst case, just disconnect the 12v power lines going to the head unit and amps while you check all fuses and replace them.  After getting the lights working properly you can hook up the head unit first and try that; then the sub amp, etc.  Taking it step by step will help you identify problems along the way.

Let me know if you need more ideas.
