Audio Systems: Infinity Radio Replacement, hefty price tag, infinity speakers

Question
My son has a 2003 Dodge Ram with "infinity sound system." The head (CD player) has gone
south on the unit and I keep getting confusing opinions as to whether or not (and if,
so what kind) of after-market unit can be put in as a replacement. Have been told you
have to replace through Dodge dealers (hefty price tag - around $700 to replace the
radio and cd player). "Experts" have told me that you can't just replace the head,
you have to also replace the speakers (which are working fine).

Question (finally...) is there a unit that is compatable with the infinity speakers?
If so, any suggestions? And, if not...any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jo

Answer
In cases like this I like the www.crutchfield.com site for giving a list of compatible products.

You didn't give me the model of the RAM; but you can put that in the crutchfield page and it will give you a listing of the various equipment that you can put in your vehicle.

Also, Crutchfield is one of the most reliable sources of information on wiring harnesses, color coding and such. If you were to purchase a head unit from them they would provide the wiring adaptors and instructions on removal of the old radio and installation of the new one.

It depends on which model Infinity is in the truck, but Crutchfield can tell you exactly what to do. Call their 800 number and speak with a tech rep. You will be surprised how much they know about these things.

But, I can assure you that a super fine head unit can be installed for a lot less than $700!  Much less!

The question of compatibility is built into the Crutchfield search; after you enter the car information into their site you can choose from many headend units, depends on the features that you may want.
