Audio Systems: Matching AMP & Subwoofer, dual voice coil, mtx thunder 801d

Question
Hi Cleggsan,
I have a MTX Thunder 801D amplifier.  The manual states that it has a 250 Watts x 1 into a 4 Ohm Load, and 500 Watts x 1 into a 2 ohm Load.

I would prefer to get a Dual Voice Coil sub, due to space limitations.  So my best bet would be to get a subwoofer that is DVC, 4 Ohms, with a RMS of around 250 Watts?  For example, the Kicker CompVR 05CVR124?

Thanks!
Jerome

Answer
Dual cone woofers are so that you can feed the output of a stereo amp into one speaker; left into one voice coil, right into the other.

Speaker power ratings don't really mean a whole lot.  It is better to look at the sensitivity rating; that will tell you how loud it is going to play with a given power input.

Kicker is good stuff.

Subs are very subjective in performance and depend greatly on two things:  The box it is mounted in an where it is placed inside the car.  So, you should check around carefully for the  right speakers and make sure they are loaded into the proper enclosure.

If you are going to mount two channels of sub amps and one subwoofer with dual voice coil you will be alright.

If you are going to use one amp, then get a subwoofer with one voice coil.

Good Luck,
Cleggsan
