Audio Systems: Putting a sub in my Explorer, rockfords, potent power

Question
The original 8-inch sub in my 99 Explorer blew and I am wanting to replace it with like a Rockford P1. I didn't know if you knew how many watts the original amps in the 99 explorer carried and if it would be enough to carry the 300 watt max Rockford sub. If not, then what would you recommend concerning amps to push the sub?

Answer
OF much greater importance than the amount of power is the loading of the sub. It must be in the right box and it must be mounted in the right place in the cavern of the vehicle.  It is not always easy to optimize this combination.

The box for mounting the speaker will help to optimize the sound output; the cavern location must be where the pressure can be pumped into the cabin of the car.  All very subjective and requires some experimentation.

If you get the right combination of box and mounting location you can get by with as little as 10 or 20 watts.  It is amazing the sound pressure level a properly tuned system can pump out.

So, my advice is to pay lots of attention to the box you are using to load the Rockfords into.  Then, if you really don't get the whack and thunder you were wanting you can replace or add a more potent power amp.
