Audio Systems: no sound in the speakers, toyota camry, stock wire

Question
i own a 1993 toyota camry. i was recently told to cut off the stereo's stock wire plug that fits into the wire harness, and just match up the wires into the new cd player. i realized i had made a mistake and bought a new wire plug from a junk yard. i wired it up and plugged it back into the stock cd player but experienced no sound. PLEASE HELP ME FIX THIS PROBLEM!?!?

ps- i have an internal amp under my passanger seat if that helps at all.

Answer
There is only one way certain to wire a system and that is to use and vom (volt, ohmmeter - I like the one at Walmart for $9.83 in their electrical department; the one in their automotive section is not as good and costs more) to test out the wiring so you know exactly which wire goes where. If you need help learning how to do that I can guide you, but it is intuitively simple if you know how to work an ohmmeter.  Use tape to mark the wires and label them as to where they go; then you know for sure.  Color of wires is not a reliable method, unfortunately.

Also, go to this site and check the wiring diagrams that may help, but I would not rely on them 100% until you have verified with an ohmmeter (and voltmeter on the 12v lines) to your comfort.

You must know the wiring diagram for the new unit; it comes with the instructions out of the box.

If you wire it wrong in the vehicle you can do permanent damage to the unit.  So, never, never turn on an auto unit until you are 100% positive you have it correct!  (This warning is for the many others who will read this in the archives!)
