Audio Systems: 1999 Toyota 4-Runner CD Player, laser diode, toyota 4 runner

Question
I have a factory single load CD player in my 1999 Toyota 4-Runner.  It was working fine when one day a CD was playing and it just spit it out.  When a CD is inserted, it seems like it's going to play but churns for a second and then spits it out.  I hope this is an easy repair.  Appreciate your response.  Thanks.

Answer
It is not an easy repair; it is most often a weak or dead laser diode, but there are many other possibilities; all of which are equally scary.

The problem is the diode is buried down inside the optical pickup assembly and requires major surgery to get it out and an expensive installation and alignment procedure.

Therefore, if you want to have it looked at by an audio shop you can get an estimate OR you can just replace the unit.  Since the vehicle is already 7 years old, you should think of replacing it - in my opinion.

You can replace it with a factory style unit from Toyota for around $300 or you can go to crutchfield.com and get a list of units that will fit the slot. Prices range from $49 and up.
