I have installed a JVC radio in my work truck and could not get the ingnition wire to give me power. The old unit worked ok, but the only way to get the new unit to work was to put a jumper from the battery wire to the ignition wire and now turn the unit off on the front panel. My question is there something I am missing about GMC wiring. Is this a trace wire or should it be giving me 12 volts through ignition. Do I have a problem through this wire to the igntion. Thanks for any advise you can give

see if your cig lighter only works when the key is in the on and run positions.  if so just splice the postative from it and coneect that to the wire on the cd player (usually red)

Let me know how it goes!

Answer
Usually I use a meter and test around on the wires in the cd wiring harness and if you cant find it there try the fuse box.  get a meter and put the negative of the meter on a solid ground.  have the meter set to DC volts and test around all the wires in the cd wirining turning the key on and off and see if you can find one that turns on and off with the key and if there's nothing there do the same procedure on the fuse box.  you dont need to start the car each time just turn the key to the position before the car starts and back off. somewhere you should find stuff that is only on with the key.
you can also try daytime running lights.  start the car and make sure all the lights are turned off and get out and walk around the vehicle, see if there are any lights on.  If so you can tap the postative from one of them and send it into the car to trigger the cd player.

Good luck!
