Audio Systems: FM stereo not working in car., antenna cable, dodge stratus

Question
I just got a 2004 Dodge Stratus. The other day while I was driving it, the FM stereo just died out. AM works fine, but when I go to FM it works for a little then it will die out. If I put the volume up all the way I can hear it a little but it just goes in and out of frequency. I'm guessing I have a loose cord or something but I don't know how these stereos work. Do I need to buy a whole new radio, or can I take it into a car dealership to get it fixed or something like Best Buy? Thanks

Answer
Based on your description it seems the fm tuner section of the unit is defective.  It should either be repaired or replaced.

If it turns out the fm tuner section needs replaced the cost would be as much or more than a new unit.

Do not go to the car dealer; then know nothing about electronic systems.

BestBuy is ok, but any car installer/repair shop may give it a quick look and offer you an opinion.

Meantime, take a look at www.crutchfield.com which will give you a list of radio/cd players that will fit your car. If you decide to purchase from them they will supply you with the necessary wiring harness and installation instructions.

(If it were a loose antenna cable the AM section would not be working properly, either).

Let me know if you want more information.
