Audio Systems: Yamaha RX-V470 - Center channel repair, yamaha rx, guage wire

Question
Bailey

You are da man!  Great advice - it works!  Is there any reason to have it permanently fixed so I can put the (-) back in the center channel?  Has the sound been degraded in any way?  I can't tell.

Question -
As I was remodeling a room, I experienced a fluke accident. My center speaker wire (the end that is usually connected to the speaker) accidently touched an open electical outlet while the other end was connected to the receiver and it zapped my center channel. Is this something I can repair or have repaired? I realize my receiver is over 10 years old, but it works fine for my needs.

Thanks
Roger

Hi Roger,

Ouch... That has to hurt, was the reciever ON at the time? If not you will have simply blown out a wire or a section of copper track on the PCB. Firstly I would hook up the (-) center speaker wire to a (-) front speaker terminal. The (-) terminals are all common in these sets. Chances are you will now have sound.

Please let me know how this goes so I can help you dig deeper if needed.

Answer
Hi again Roger,

Rest assured the sound quality has not been affected. This is because the reciever was off when this happened. Whilst the reciever is off the Amplifier outputs are disconnected via a relay or 2.

Yes, this can be easily rectified. Look inside the reciever at the PCB attatched to the (-) center terminal.
Look as to where the track goes, check for signs of a blowout - there will be either a blown out wire or pcb track . If the track / wire is ok, look at the pcb from underneath the set.

Once the blowout is located, repair it using some decent guage wire.

Let me know how all goes.
