Audio Systems: car stereo keeps resetting, jvc kd, electrical department

Question
I have a 1990 toyota pickup with a JVC KD-G120 it works
perfectly until i turn the car off. As long as the key stays in the
ignition the time and preset stations stay set but when i remove
the key everything goes back to factory settings. It's really
annoying and i would like to fix it. Thank you.

Answer
I could not find documentation on the model you have, but surely the problem is loss of sustaining voltage or backup battery.

ONE:  The sustainging voltage comes from the battery; and maybe you have that line hooked up to the ignition.  For example, there are two 12 volt wires feeding the radio; one is switched for the main power ON and OFF.  The other stays on all the time to keep the clock and presets powered; it drains the battery just a few milliamps and does not discharge the battery over short periods (days) of time.

TWO:  Some radios have a little internal battery that powers the clock and preset functions when the radio is off.  It is usually under a little door on the back side of the unit.

So, here is my suggestion:  Get a small voltmeter from Walmart electrical department ($9.83 for the right one - they have a couple of models) and use it to measure the line voltages to the radio.  You will be able to see when the one line loses 12v when the key is removed.  Then, move that wire to a fused, constant 12v connection.
