Audio Systems: Intermittent Car Stereo, digital voltmeter, fuse holder

Question
I had a Tevion car stereo professionally installed in my old
Merc (1979). It worked great for 20 months before i had any
problems. Then it started cutting when I pressed the accelerator
(always came back when I hit the brakes). I read something about
a faulty voltage regulator causing a similar problem? Recently
I've been able to temporarily fix the problem by hitting the
side of the central console where the stereo is installed. The
stereo seemed to come on and off as it felt like it (always went
off if I hit a speed bump). I thought it might have been a loose
connection. The stereo is now not working at all. Yesterday I
took the stereo out to have a bit of a prod around but there
didn't seem to be a loose connection. There is a security LED
which is always flashing so there is some power reaching the
unit. I've checked car's fuses (all ok), can't find a fuse on
the stereo unit. I'm OK at fixing stuff if I'm told what to do.
Suggestions on what to do? I'd like to know if the unit is
defective and needs to be replaced or if its not the unit at
all. Or should I take it to a pro to fix ($$$). Thanks in
advance for any advice you can give me :-)

Answer
Get a test light or digital voltmeter. Check the red accessory wire at the back of the head unit. It should have +12vdc. when key is on. I'm thinking melted or broken fuse holder, cracked fuse, or broken solder joint inside the stereo.
if inside the stereo this is how much work it is:
