Audio Systems: Factory CD player, chevy s10, compatible models

Question
Hi, I have a 03 Chevy S10 with Factory RDS Stereo. The cd player seeming to be going nuts or something. All it says now is Check CD and spits the cd out or just holds on to it, and I have to press the eject button 5+ times to get it to pop out. When I first got the truck( its used), the cd player would take forever to load track 1 and sometimes it wouldn't. It would then play track 1 until I pressed next then it take forever to load track 2 and sometimes it wouldn't. And this is on store bought and burned. I don't think the Service people at the dealer believe me, they just say its the CD's. I unplugged the battery for about 25 minutes, still doesn't help, did the same with the fuse. You would think that would reset it but don't think its reseting the sterep system, the FM presets are always still set. even with the battery and fuse unplugged. I can sometimes hear a loading noise in the cd unit like something is stuck in it, even with the truck and radio turned off. Its weird.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks,
Jerry DuBose

Answer
The car dealer is not a good place to take it for this matter. You should have a good repair/installer shop look at it.

The symptoms you describe are typical problems faced when the controller IC and associated circuitry go heywire.  The repair requires a close look by a trained tech.  The diagnosis will require some internal testing and investigation.  You may find the cost of repair to be too high for the value of the system.

Replacing it may be a wiser option than repair.

A new aftermarket replacement can be easily installed in this model.  Take a look at www.crutchfield.com to obain a list of compatible models you could consider; that will help you in the decision to repair or replace.
