Audio Systems: dvd players, sports buff, toshiba dvd player

Question
Hi
I'll explain the long way , if you dont mind. I have a tv and a vcr , and my vcr acts as my converter my channels are programmed into the vcr and i change channels with the vcr remote. Now this is the tricky part...i bought a Toshiba DVD Player. I plugged it in to my power bar, and there are 6 plugs  2 red  2 white 2 blue. Now my tv doesnt have the input holes in the back so 3 plugs go into the back of my vcr and 3 go into the back of the dvd player , making sure they all match up. I was told the first thing to do to watch a movie is  look on my vcr remote and click on the   Imput Select button..the screen is all blue with the word LINE in the top corner.. then push the power button on  on the dvd player...then open the tray and put in a dvd disk...on the screen  i see   Enter  Selection  Play   i click play....its works for a few minutes then  lines  go across my screen   then the screen turns blue and repeats this every  couple of minutes. It would be a great help if you or someone could explain to me if i left out something , or is there a button on my  vcr remote i have to push on  or is there a certain channel the tv has to be on. I am not technical i am a sports buff, and its  annoying that i finally  get some dvd movies and i cant see them. Thank you so very much for anything you can help me with. Take care and have a great day.

Answer
You explained it very well and for what you have you are hooking it up exactly how you should. Congratulations! Well if you are getting video from the dvd player at all it should be hooked up properly.  I dont know why you are saying that there is blue on the connector,  usually it's red, white (audio) and yellow for video. if you could tell me the model number that might help.
If you look at this picture of a tosh. dvd player:

You can see across the bottom row red, white, yellow.  these are what you would use.
Across the top row are composite video jacks.  your VCR would not be able to handle these.
I just had a thought!  I think I know exactly what's going on here.  your dvd player is probably in progressive mode.  ITs a different format and you vcr will not be able to handle it.  there may be a light on the front that says progressive.  you need to turn that off and your videos should play fine but first see if there is the yellow jack since you need to switch to this if it's there.
GOOD LUCK!  Let me know how it goes please!
