Audio Systems: Blown outputs?, pioneer deh p3500, output transistors

Question
I had my Pioneer DEH-P3500 car stereo in my older car.  It worked properly, but when I put it in my Grand Prix and turned it on, the stereo had suffi
cient power to run, but there was no sound coming out of the speakers. I turned it all the way up, and some distorted sound would come out one of the rear speakers. I asked a proffesional and he tested it and told me my ouputs were blown.  He said I could have it repaired, but the cost of that is not woth it. I have worked with electronics before, repairing them and such, but never with a cd player. If it is possible for somebody to fix it for me, would I be able to do this for myself? If I can then how?

Answer
But, if you repair it you must make sure the outputs don't go again.  I suspect the wiring was wrong and you were driving the amp outputs into a short (if the speaker wires were not hooked up right, for example).

So, assuming you know how to check out the wiring to the speakers and can wire it perfectly, then proceed to repair.

You must pull the covers off and find the output transistors or modules (they are mounted on a heat sink so they can dissipate the heat and stay as cool as possible).

Then you must find the part number and order the parts. MOst electronic shops can get the parts for you.  They will cost several dollars.

The old ones must be removed carefully and the new ones mounted, greased (for heat transfer, or they will pop again) and soldered in.

It would also be nice if you knew how to check the bias voltages on the outputs after they are installed to make sure they are connected up and running right.

Then, when the outputs are replaced and you think it it ready to fire up again, do an out of the dash verfication by just connecting the dc to power it up and connect one speaker and one by one go to each of the amps to verify it is working right.

Good Luck,
