Audio Systems: 1970 F100 ranger, fuse box, posative

Question
Hi im trying to get a cd player to work in my truck right now. The guy
that had it before me had one hooked up in it but it was a cheap one so
i took it out and tried to put a new one in and it only came on for a
few seconds until i poped the fuse. i put another one in and it didn't
work after that. So i wanted to make sure it wasn't the radio and
installed it into my car and it worked fine. The guy had both wires running
to the fuse box. One plugged into it and the other on a fuse. is this
right. can you help me

Answer
TYPICALLY BUT NOT ALWAYS:
there should be a yellow wire on the unit, this should be connected to a posative that's always live even when the key is out.
Then there should be a red wire.  this goes to a "switched" posative. one that's only on when the key is in the "on" and "run" positions.
Lastly there needs to be a ground.  this is typically a black wire and can simply be firmly attached to any solid metal (providing that metal is attached to the frame)
Worst cas scenario you pull a new wire right from the battery, through the firewall and into dash where you connect it to the unit's yellow. then typically the cig lighter only works when the key is in so connect it's wire to the red and the ground is easy.  You should get a meter to test the wires,  this will help alot.
Good luck!
