Audio Systems: 98 Ford Explorer Stereo System, car space, ford explorer

Question
Have never done this before, not sure if you are the one to ask. I have a 98 Ford Explorer and the CD disk player stopped working and says that it has a reject error. Hasn't worked in the past year or so. Now the display on the stereo system has went out. Do I need to replace the entire system or can it be repaired? Would it be cheaper to repair or replace? If I need a new one, how do I go about finding one and getting it replaced? Thank you in advance for your time and patiences.

Answer
Well, anything electronic can be repaired, but as you are asking, at what price and is it worthy of such an investment.

The car is 8 years old. It shows some serious problems already. In my opinion, based only on your description, I would say the unit would be better off replaced.  That way you will avoid the repair cost (which could easily be $200 or so for the kind of troubles you explained) and a new unit would be new technology so you could play mp3s, etc.

I like www.crutchfield.com for investigating the equipment that will fit your vehicle.

You don't need speakers, probably, just the headend unit.

http://www.cardomain.com/addvehicle  is another one for you to check.

Both Cardomain and Crutchfield will give you a listing of the units that will fit your car space and a the harness that you will need for hooking it up.  There may be a bracket required also.  These sites will help you; you don't need to buy from them, but they would appreciate it, I am sure.  I have found crutchfield to be very reliable for most cars.

Good luck,
Cleggsan

PS: Sometimes Bestbuy and CircuitCity type stores will give free install; you have to check their special deals going on.
