Nissan Repair: maxima wheel studs, wheel studs, lugnut

Question
QUESTION: How do I replace the wheel studs on my 1990 maxima. The front ones

ANSWER: Churchel,

Remove the wheel.  Remove the caliper.  Remove the torque member.  That is the thing the caliper bolts to.  Remove the rotor.  Now, drive the studs out the back of the hub and install the new ones with a stack of washers and a lug nut by installing the lugnut backwards with lots of washers on the stud before you thread on the nut.  Use lots of lubricant and tighten the nut until the stud seats.  Repeat the process for all of them.  Reinstall the parts.  Make sure you wire the caliper up with wire or a coat hanger to prevent the brake hose being damaged while you remove and install studs.  At no time press on the brake pedal with the caliper removed so you do not push the pistons out.

QUESTION: The hub on the car has to come off in order to replace the studs. How do I do this? Is it just pressed on or is their something holding it to the driveshaft? Thank you

Answer
Churchel,

You should be able to rotate the hub to get the clearance you need to get the studs to come out the back.  If you cannot do this you will need to remove the spindle by taking the center nut off and the two bolts on the strut and the lower control arm ball joint.  And, you will have to remove the tie rod end to get the spindle off and then use a press to take the hub off and press a new one in.  Try to rotate the assembly first since it is really a pain to take the whole spindle off.
