Audio Systems: CD Error (2002 Mustang), mechanical mechanisms, laser diode

Question
I have a 2002 Ford Mustang and it keeps saying "CD ERROR" it will not let me eject or load any cd's in the 6 disk cd player.  I have the Mach 460 audio system.

Answer
Probable causes are:

- bad laser diode and optical pickup unit
- defective digital decoder inside the electronics
- mechanical mechanisms inside door and disc handling defective
- controller IC chip defective

And so on.  In other words, there are many possibilities for this and the best way is to take it into an install/repair place where they can look at it.  It may be a simple repair, but usually is not and sometimes costs many $$.

You should at least try a reset.  Do you know how to reset the mechanism?  There should be an instruction in your car manual on how to do it.  There are several pages on your system in the glove box manual and I didn't have time to go through it in great detail, but on page 42 there are some references to error messages that you should check out.

If you have misplaced your glove box manual you can download it from the ford.com web pages.

Hope this helps.
