Audio Systems: 94 F150 Stereo connections, speaker connector, radio radio

Question
I recently bought a 94 F150 with a newer Kenwood head unit installed (sirius ready). The unit powers up and seems to operate fine, except there is no sound at all...even turned all the way up. I pulled it from the dash to find that the factory speaker connector had been cut and the wires had been spliced together. Is it possible that this unit won't work without the factory connector and an adaptor or could the problem lie somewhere else?

some f150 came with a factory amplifier
it is hard to tell if you plugs have been cut   cut one of the wires like the two white wires and plug a small speaker in to the radio to see if there is output from the radio
radio can be bad
