Audio Systems: right speaker losing sound, peugeot 206 gti, alpine head unit

Question
hi
i have a 2003 peugeot 206 gti, and i have put an alpine head unit in and clarion component 6 inch speakers in the front(by component i mean mid and tweeter are seperate, i'm in aus and not sure what you guys call them). they are connected to 4 channel amp on channels three and four and i have a sub briged over channels one and two. my problem is that the right side tweeter is quieter than the left, and the right mid is quieter again with barely any sound  output at all. speakers, wires, head unit and sub are new but the amp is second hand.
your advice would be much appreciated.

Answer
Let's assume you have the wiring correct between the amp output and the speakers; you can check them with an ohmmeter easily to make sure there are not cross connections or shorts.

If you are driving the speakers separately then each one needs its own amp and each amp must be driven by crossover network so that only the frequency band they are to reproduce is sent to them. Have I got it right?

To check for amp output you can take a raw driver and a lenght of wire and connect direct to the amp outputs to check for same level on each channel, etc... That is best way even though difficult to pull the unit and make the connections, etc., I know.

You can also check (if easier to do) by swapping, temporarily, the left mid with the right and left tweeter with the right and see what happens.  If the low sound follows the speaker it is a speaker problem. If it stays the same after swap it means the problem is with the electronics and so on.

Hope this helps you get to the bottom of it.  Let me know more if you need....
