Subaru Repair: 2000 Subaru Outback Legacy AWD/AT, Subaru Repair Expert

Question
I have a 2000 Subaru Outback Legacy wagon with relatively high mileage and 4 speed Mazda electronic control automatic transmission.  During a recent trip of a little over 100 miles one way the transmission started howling at me.  As soon as I could safely get off of the highway I did, and I came to a stop.  As I tried to start forward again to clear off the roadway altogether, the transmission started having a popping sound and the car barely rolled into the roadside dirt.  I have no gears now other than Park or Neutral, and if I put it into any other gear it has a popping sound like metal on metal.  No trouble codes or anything the ECM can detect.  Any ideas what may be wrong?  I had a F-150 that did something like this, but it wasn't quite so drastic andI had a valve broke inside of the transmission valve body.

Answer
Hi Jeremy,

If you have a Subaru Outback, you do not have a Mazda transmission its called the E4AT and is a Subaru component. Next the noise and symptoms could be one of many things, such as a broken front CV axle, differential bearing, hub, or another drive train component in the Differential such as a spider or carrier gear.

Without seeing the car, I have no idea whats the cause.
