i was given a volvo but the radio player does not work. i want to buy one, can i buy other brands like alpine, goodmans, sony etc, will they work?

Most likeley yes.  The best way to find out is to go to:

pick your year make model and extras if applicable
then pick cd players and it will show results only applying to models that fit your car.  i recomend buying from here as well.  even though you can find the products cheaper on ebay or something, crutchfield will supply you with excelent step by step instructions on how to change your unit.  they will even give you free tools (if required) to remove your unit.  They also provide excelent support and returns if nessesary.  The CD player is usually the first thing to fail in a sound system so having support is great.
