Audio Systems: dst/dvd, dolby digital ex, channel speakers

Question
I want to buy a dvd but it says it is also DST.  I know that means it has extra sound.  Will it play on a regular dvd even if is not fixed for DST.  Would it play and i would just not get the extra sound.  Thanks

Answer
Dear Diana,

I think you mean DTS, right?

DTS is a surround sound algorithm that will play surround sound on DVD players and A/V receivers that are equipped to decode it. Virtually every DVD manufactured these days is encoded with both DTS and Dolby Digital EX, the two leading surround sound algorithms. If your machines are equipped to decode them, then they do. If not, then they're ignored. Also, virtually all DVDs have a non-surround default sound called "PCM stereo", designed to play over only two stereo, or front channel, speakers. If that's all you have, then that's what you'll hear.

Some DVDs have an AUDIO SET-UP feature embedded in their menus. You can check this to make sure that you get the sound you want, but if all you have is two speakers, and your receiver isn't equipped to play back DTS or Dolby Digital EX, then the DVD's sound will default to PCM stereo.

In short, it will play just fine.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,
