Audio Systems: 2002 Maxima Bose System Sub Audio Intermittent, bose system, protection mode

I own a Maxima 2002 with factory installed Bose Audio syste ( 7 speakers).

For the last 6 months I get intermittent or audio output from my subwoofer. Initially outout was very consistent with ocassional silent sub.,
lately it has gotten worse, now I seldom get any audio from the sub, and when it does, it only last for a few minutes.

Rdio was replaced by dealer, still the same issue.
So it's either the sub amp, or the sub( related wiring..)

Your feedback as to most probable causes will be appreciated, since my warranty has expired.

I am technically inclided, so with some guidance Imay have some luck getting to the root cause.

hello:
i notice that when the woofer that is 2 ohms, read less than that,  like 1.0 ohm the sub out on the amplifier  turns of or goes in protection mode this amplifier is just for that sub so it don't afect any of the other speakers  
unplug the speaker and try a diferent sub or speaker for a couple of days most likely it wont tur off
