Audio Systems: Celestion DL8 drivers, voice coils, marietta area

Question
Hi,
I recently bought a pair of Celestion DL8 Series Two speakers for just £10. However, one of the woofers are damaged - the suspension scrapes. I am wondering if it is still possible to get spares for speakers as old as these, because they still sound good and I'd like to keep them.

Thanks for your time and effort,
Tim

Answer
Rubbing or scraping voice coils are a common problem, especially with older speakers. It can be due to age or from overpowering or from a loose voice coil.

Most large cities have speaker rebuilders; these people know how to replace the surrounds and voice coils, etc.  And most of them do a good job.  If you are near Atlanta, for example, there is a good one in the Marietta area.  Cost of repair is not so much.

You will need to pull the driver out of the box and take it or ship it to the rebuilder after you have spoken with them.

http://www.fredsoundofmusic.com/speaker_repair.html  is in the Portland area.  And there are others.

Another possibility is find and equivelant driver and merely replace the woofer with another one of the same basket size and acoustical performance.

Lastly, you may be able to fix it yourself if you are handy.

http://www.decware.com/newsite/repairs.htm  sell repair kits and materials to do your own repairs.

Lots of choices available to you; good luck.

PS:  Places like http://justwoofers.com/ and http://www.woofersetc.com/ may have a woofer that will drop right into your cabinet.

PPS:  Sometimes in older speakers the reason for the voice coil rub is the surround is pulling the cone out of alignment and a new surround will fix the problem. You can tell this by applying finger pressure on one side or the other as you gently push the cone in. If this is the case, applying a new surround is easy and not so expensive.
