QuestionThe speakers are the small type which came with the original receiver. Are you suggesting I change the type of speakers?

Question -
Please tell me the way in which to setup the tones,levels etc for each speaker for the best possible audio from this particular system. The Sony book is much to be desired and somewhat confusing.
Also, I have noticed that when compared to other audio systems the sound effects (doors being closed, guns being fired)are just not as crisp sounding with my system. Could this be the way in which the tones and levels are set up?
By the way, I have tone tested all of the speakers.

This is a fine surround receiver with plenty of power and flexible features and such.
If you are not getting good sound (set everythig for just flat frequency response) then it is probably the speaker systems you are using. Of course, the amplifiers could also be defective, but that would be a rare case.
Some speakers are very sensitive to high frequency energy and the tweeters quickly blow out leaving the sound muffled and not as clear and bright as it should be. Consider that, also.

AnswerNo, but if they don't sound good and you want more fidelity you may have to upgrade. Most packaged surround systems to not have very good speakers.
As you may know, really good speakers that reproduce with good fidelity are very expensive. As a rule, in a component system, for example, in order to get the best balanced sound with the equipment selected, the speaker system cost will be twice or more of all the other components.
Did you check to see if the tweeters have been damaged? That will make the sound dull or less bright, especially for the sounds you mentioned in your first email.
