Audio Systems: Pioneer receiver, pioneer reciever, pioneer receiver

Question
I have a Pioneer reciever that I purchased about 25 years ago.  Haven't used it for the past three years, stored in a hot/cold attic in Midwest and before that was hardly used either.  I purchased some speakers for it because the original ones were blown.  The sound is full of static; both from radio and with an add on cd disc player (sony).  Double checked the speakers on another reciever and they work fine.  What is causing the static and break-up on the sound?

Answer
Dear Kristi,

Dust. Dirt. Age. All of the above.

Unplug the unit.

I suggest you open it up--remove the screws that hold the cover to the chassis--and give it a thorough cleaning. Use a low-powered hand-held vacuum. Apply contact solution to the switches and various rotary controls. Then test it to see if it was merely dirty. If you get the same results, it's possible that the hot/cold storage environment caused a part to fail. To check this you'll need to take it in to a qualified repair technician, and that will cost you.

IMHO, if it comes to having the unit serviced, you're better off trashing it and buying a new one. Unless it's a classic of sorts, it's not going to be worth the money to have it fixed.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,
