how do i find out what the code is to unlock the stereo in my volvo? does it cost money to find out the code? is it better to call the volvo dealership itself?

The dealer will tell you what is required to unlock it.

Since it is 'very old' (in mobile audio terms), you may go through all of this and find that it is malfunctioning.

Might best advice would be to get a new aftermarket headunit for the car at Circuit City, ect. Skip the dealer, the headaches, and get back to enjoying sound while spending less than 150.00 including install.
