Audio Systems: Radio Wiring, ford escort lx, 1995 ford escort lx

Question
My 1995 Ford Escort LX never had a radio when I purchased it.  I got a radio that is standard on the car.  I purchased a wiring harness from the local parts store but the wires are different colors and I don't know how to connect them.  One set of wires in the car has 8 and the other set has 5.  Can you help me figure this out so I can install my radio?

Thanks.

Answer
The set of 8 should be your speakr connections, and the set of 5 should be power. You can test them with a 1.5 volt battery (AA or AAA works fine) just brush the stripped back ends of two wires across the battery terminals, and you should hear a crackle from the speaker. This method won't hurt the speaker, as long as you don't leave it connected for long. The power wires can be tested with a test light. Turn on the park lights and ignition, and find the 3 wires with +12VDC on them. Then turn off the park lights, retest, the one that lost power is illumination. Turn off the key, the one that lost power is accessory. The remaining wire is memory. If you send me the wire codes you have now, I my be able to match them up for you.
