Audio Systems: Troubleshooting combo radio,cd,tape in 1993 Nissan Altima, cell phone charger, radio bench

Question
Victor,

I appreciate your help on this bloody frustrating issue.

The antenna does not appear to freeze. When the 12v power is available it raises and if power fails, the antenna returns to a closed position. I tried the suggested charger test in the lighter socket. With no power to the radio unit, the lighter unit is alive and well.

Over to you for further suggestions.

Question -
Victor,

I have a strange problem with losing power to the radio/cd/tape unit on my 1993 Nissan Altima.

I am convinced it is a lack of power problem as the power antenna also does not work. Note: The lack of power is also intermittent.

I have checked all of the obvious: fuses, loose wiring etc all to know avail. I have not removed the radio unit from the dash as this looks like a major undertaking.

Please provide some guide lines and potential fixes for this intermittent problem.

Hi!
We will have to work togheter here!, is your antenna freezing or if it is up when losing power will go down? a easy test to check the power going to the radio is to put a cell phone charger on the lighter socket, since most of the cars uses the same circuit and fuse for the radio and the lighter, check if the charger goes off when the radio does it.

Answer
Ok.
It seems the that the power is getting lost on the radio plug itself or maybe inside the radio, you can try to remove the radio and push the plug to see if it is well seated, if that does not fix it you'll need to have your radio "bench-tested" in a shop.
