Audio Systems: Static from stereo speakers, ford bronco, replacement speakers

Question
I have a 1981 ford bronco, and there is no wiring harness or dash kit for it.. So I built my own, off the old stereo it was easy to tell which was the electrical part and the speaker part.. So I have it all hooked up, and when I turn the new deck up, with new speakers, at about 3/4 of the volume it starts to make static sounds, I have checked the ground, and also checked the suppressor on the power wire. Is the speakers drawing to much from the deck? I also took a speaker out and just hard wired it straight to the deck, and still it make that static sound. It does it to all 4 speakers, and they are brand spankin' new. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.

Answer

Hello Mr Kunz,

The term 'static' is pretty vague (for me to fully understand in an email), but I will try to help you as much as possible in a general sense as to noise.

Speakers do not draw power at all [from a deck, amplifier or any source], but they do determine the amps' actual output wattage by the impedance load which they place on it. If your speakers match (or are within) the decks' output impedance rating, there will be no problems with that [unless they will not handle the RMS power that is applied to them]. Generally, most decks are compatible with 4 ohm speakers and most mobile replacement speakers are 4 ohm.

That said (and presuming that all of the new components are in good working order), a system re-wire would be the first order of buisness in my opinion:

A possible shorter route?
I would try a new deck ground first (attach it securely and directly to the vehicle chassis), then run new speaker wiring (if you have not done so yet)in most any vehicle system that is over 6-7 years old will actually develop cracks in the insulation which can 'leak' and  short intermittently causing what some people call static.

Additionally, being a 1981, the other radio wiring may have deterioration problems within in the vehicle harness itself. The best way to resolve that is to manually wire it from a freshly wired source for Memory, Constant Power and that Ground I mentioned. I will also mention the antennas' age  since you did not specify if this occurs on the radio or not.

The bottom line is that it probably needs it all replaced.
I hope this is useful information.

If you need specific help with manually wiring it, that is no problem. Just let me know the specific models of the deck and speakers, and I can provide the information.

Sincerely,
Jmael
