Audio Systems: what kiond of system is good., kenwood cd player, watts rms

Question
hello victor i am in the market for a new sound system that will be going into my 1986 ford ranger super cab. i have no idea how to tell if a system is good or not. a couple of questions. is going to car toys a good idea or not? also when looking for head units and speakers on the internet or in a store what should i be looking for?  (22 watts RMS x 4 • System Q Sound Control • 2 sets of preamp outputs) i copied and pasted this from a discription of a kenwood cd player. what does the 22 watts RMS x 4 mean, is it good. also how can i tell if speakers are good enough and how much power is going to be needed for them to sound good. i want to spend around 200 dollars for the head unit, and speakers. later i would like to add a loud sub. is that where the 2 sets of preamp outputs, comes from. do you know any good websites to look at.
please help
thank you very much,
Brandon Jones

Answer
Hi!
Well that's a hard question, not always the most powerfull engine makes the better car!, but nowadays 22w and even 25W x 4 is the standard, since most of the radio makers uses the same amplifier chips! so check for sound quality instead, personally i prefer Alpine first and Clarion after. But that's my taste maybe not yours. Compare several with the same CD (bring one that you know to the store)and you will hear the difference, and don't worry about the power, you can amplify the level but not the quality.
