Land Rover Repair: interior leak looks to be coming from the AC, land rover discovery, 2003 land rover discovery

Question
Hello.  Just purchased a 2003 land rover discovery II on Thursday. Today noticed that there was water pooling along the door jam on the driver's side.  Further inspection revealed the leak to be coming from the ac vents near the gear shift and soaking the floor on both the driver's and passenger's sides.  Have you heard of this?  Is it common? If you know of this type of issue, do you know how costly it will be to repair? Had land rover complete an inspection of the car before purchasing and this was never disclosed as a potential problem. Thanks for your insight  and help. Sincerely

Answer
Hi Stephanie,

yes, water ingress is a problem with LR's.  It could also be a coolant problem - does it smell like water (no smeil) or does it have a sweet odour (coolant)?

IF it's coolant, your heater matrix (located behind the dashboard center) is leaking.  If it's water, it could be the AC drain tubes are plugged and you'll need to clean them out or replace them. If could also be a water ingress problem from the windshield and corner posts - another problem with LR's.

I would have an experienced LR mechanic do the repair and make sure the previous owner 'foots' the bill.  IF not, return the Disco and claim that they sold you a vehicle with a known fault.
They can either cancel the sale or fix the problem.

As far as LR dealership not finding the problem - they are aware of it but I doubt they would check for it.  They'd be concerned mostly with engine and transmission, lights, brakes, AC and navigation - all the major components.  They would consider this a minor problem and assume it is not present.  Just like LR - deny the problem exists and eventually it will go away.

Best of luck with this,
