Audio Systems: Denon AVC3000 hook up,no sound, japanese product, mute control

Question
I just went through a move and when I went to hook up my A/V receiver to my speakers and cd player.  I don't get any sound.  My question is in the past I needed interconnects to hook up from pre out to main in on the back of my receiver that was on an old marantz is that true for my denon or is it something else?

Answer
Dear Sean,

The best I can glean from very scant information on the Web is that the AVC-3000 dates from 1989 and is either a receiver (has a radio) or an integrated amplifier (doesn't have a radio). You *shouldn't* have to use any external connection like you apparently did with your old Marantz.

If you're not getting sound, it could very well be that the move has jarred loose something important, a common occurence with older components. Make sure the MUTE control isn't engaged, that you have the right speakers selected, and the right source selected. Sometimes, especially with older Japanese product, simply having the tape monitor engaged, will stop the sound from coming out of the speakers; it is redirected to the headphone output. You need to check all of this.

If the problem persists, my guess is that something's loose, which in turn needs to be found and reconnected. Unless you feel comfortable doing this, it should be done by a qualified repair technician. You may find, however, that the cost of the repair will exceed the value of the component, in which case you may want to consider replacing it.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,
