Audio Systems: No sound from stereo speakers, mini stereo system, aiwa nsx

Question
Hi Kevin,

I own an Aiwa NSX-AJ70 mini stereo system.  I recently moved the stereo to a different area in my house.  Before moving it I unplugged it and disconnected the speakers.  I moved the unit and hooked up all connections per the manual and then powered up the stereo.  I have no sound coming from the speakers...nothing!  The equalizer on the front panel shows me there should be sound but there isn't.  I've tried disconnecting everything and reconnecting several times but nothing works.  Why isn't there any sound coming from my speakers?  Can this be fixed?  Would you help me?

Thanks very much!
Tara

Answer
Dear Tara,

Is the MUTE button engaged?

Also, make sure that you've selected the correct listening source; e.g., you don't have TAPE selcted when you want to listen to a CD. I know, I know...very basic, but you'd be surprised.

Otherwise, (1) you could have blown the speakers when disconnecting them (unlikely); (2) you could have blown the output circuits by letting the positive and negative speaker leads touch while the unit was powered up (also, unlikely--unless you forgot to turn everything off before disconnecting the wires); or (3) the output circuitry came loose when you moved it (not as rare as one would think, especially with less expensive all-in-one units).

For these three possibilities, you have to have the unit checked out by a qualified repair technician. Keep in mind that audio repairs are expensive, so you should get an estimate of the cost of the diagnostic tests--usually not refundable, but included in the final labor estimate. If you think you want to pay for the diagnostic, then be prepared to compare the total cost of the repair with simply replacing the unit. I've found that less expensive components, especially if they have 3-4 years wear on them, are not worth the cost of repair. That of course doesn't account for emotional attachment, etc.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,

Kevin
