Answer
Sorry, but I do not do walkthroughs on removal and reinstallation. There are too many ways to damage a part (or much worse).

It sounds like the laser has gone south or is at least very dirty. It is probably too late for a 'preventive' cd cleaner system like an Allsop. You might try one.
I doubt finding a reset button on it would help , but you can try it if you can locate one (the fact that it displays a fixed table of contents reenforces this thought.
These are the last efforts before replacing a CD head unit.

The good news is that you can get a very capable MP3 compatible CD player for under $100. This will let you play burned CD's with up to 256 MP3's per cd.  Usually, it's more like 120 tracks at high quality [~160kbit encoding rate].. even so, the MP3 is still a very cool situation.

Installation kits and factory wiring adaptors abound.. try Walmart of Circuit City (approx 20.00 for both).

Installs by pros are about 50.00 and well worth it if you do not know how to get that one out. They will guarantee the wiring they perform (for the life of the vehicle), so that is a plus.

From the looks of the 2001 ram 1500, you will need to start by getting that large plastic bezel that covers and surrounds the headunit, off. That (in itself) may cost you $80.00 + if you break it (this is a guestimate, but you can see from this example why I do not do walkthroughs).
Trust me, get a reputable professional to bid/do this and you cannot go wrong.
