Audio Systems: Car Stereo Installed yeterday - car dies at stops today????, stop signs, decent mood

Question
I had a stereo system installed in my 1990 Eagle Talon TSI last night.  The purchase and install was done at Best Buy.  CD/Radio, front and back speakers.  No AMP installed or previously in car. Car ran okay last night and on the way to work this a.m.  At lunch it started dying at stop signs and if I slowed down.  It would start right up again and ran fine, if I was going fast enough.  Is this a coincidence?  I wanted some background info before calling Best Buy.  I am a single female and suspect that they might tell me it is not related to install or new equipment, even if it is.  I am SO bummed out by this. I would appreciate any help that you could possibly give me.  THANKS - Linda

Answer

A valid worry there, Linda.

I am no attorney... ;) But I see that you need a professional opinion on this situation.

The fact that "your car may have developed this problem all on its' own, and it is just bad timing" is a huge factor in isolating (much less correcting) this problem.
Determining who is going to pay for this service is the problem... you or a shop.
Ok.. all balony aside, I think that Best buy is the last place anyone should take buisness, much less their vehicle!
However, they should stand behind that installation and its' wiring for the life of the car (and ARE responsible if it is their doing that is causing the problem).
That said, I believe that you should take it to them and ask for a manager (they had better look over 25, too). Do not worry about which department you go to (At BB, perhaps the farther from the car audio section you go, the better).
Tell this manager your situation while understanding that it may be coincidental. This will help keep both parties in a decent mood and on the correct side of thought (that is, making you happy).
In any case, you will likely eventually be confronted with the installer. Since they have a since of pride, this is going to be a flip of the coin as to hoping that they take it and jump right on fixing it (as generally, installs of this nature [esp in such a 'seasoned' car] are straight forward and do not deal with any wires that will cause your problem).  This (or something similar) will probably be his arguement {if he is going to have one}.
It is called a 'deck and 4' by the installers, and that type of install IS their bread and butter so I am sure they will pull it and check it out.

Just remember as you talk to them that it MAY be totally coincidental. But the fact that they just worked on it is what made you came to them 1st.

Not a lot of help, eh?  Well, I hope this helps to some degree. If so, then we have both completed a nice goal.
