Audio Systems: 2001 Chrysler T&C minivan lights on radio on but no sound, chrysler town and country minivan, chrysler town and country

Question
Hi Cody thanks so much for your quick response.  That was fast.  My radio did come back on.  I checked it before I went to bed.  Now you said it sounds like the unit might have a short.  We thought that too, but it's odd this is happening to two different radio's.  Could there be a short in the wiring somewhere?  And, is there a way to find that out?  Thanks again.
Missy

Hi, I hope you can help me.  I have a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country minivan.  I bought it used in 2002.  I will explained what happened the first time and what we did to fix it.  I had a  factory installed radio with 4 disc cd changer.  Four months after I bought the van the radio went out.  I was listening to it while the van was off.  When I went to turn the van on there was no sound from the radio.  The lights blinked and I was able to get my cd's out.  Then after awhile the lights went out.  So I took it to the dealer and they said the radio got fried.  I had to purchase one from them for $300.00 or buy a used one.  I said no I didn't want theirs.  I would use a boombox first before I bought one from them for $300.00  They told me to go to the junkyard and get one.  I did for $150.00, the same radio.  The new radio worked good until recently.  About 2 weeks ago I had the van off again and just had the radio on.  I had done this before and no problems.  Then when I went to start the van the radio would not turn on.  About 30 minutes later, I was still at the van looking through the manual(trying to find a solution) I heard a noise from the front of the van, so I thought I would try the radio again, well it turn on.  So we did nothing, except remember to turn the radio off before turning the van off.  Well I forgot to do that today and now my radio is not working(no sound).  I can turn the radio on and the clock and lights work.  I can change stations.  The cd lights aren't working properly they come on then go off.  But it won't, I guess reset itself.  We checked the fuses they seem fine.  We couldn't find any fuses inside the van.  Sorry for a long question but I wanted you to have most of the background info.  Please let me know if you can help find a solution.  Hopefully not another radio.  As that would be my third radio in 3 years.  Thank you very much in advance.  Missy

Missy,

it sounds like the unit has a short in it , i would recommend changing out with an aftermarket unit which you can get and have installed for under 200 dollars at your local radio shack, best buy, or circuit city... now to reset the unit you have which might cause it to start working again simple disconnect your battery for about 10-15 mins this will reset everything and hopefully turn your unit back on , but i would suggest looking into an aftermarket unit so you dont have to keep worrying about this one going out .. hope this helps you out if you need anything else let me know

thanks

Answer
Missy,

Glad to hear its up and running again i thought the reset my do the trick ... yes if there is a short its most likly in the main wiring for the sound system, its obviously nothing "major" since a simple reset cures the ale..... the next time it goes out and the reset trick doenst work i would take it to a good audio shop instead of a dealer and let them check everything really good with a meter to try and trace down the cause.. it could be as simple as a small circuit breaker inline with the sound system that kicks from to much of a load and is reset when you disconnect... its hard to tell and give you a specific without getting into it and looking for myself... but as long as it works and nothing else goes wrong you should be fine .... let me know if you need anything else and thanks again !!
