Audio Systems: Factory Head Units, ford units, home stereos

Question
Sir, I apologize for the confusion but I don't want an older Jeep factory radio, I want an old Jeep with a new factory radio of some type "other than Jeep". I'm trying to use the factory radio because of the look and feel of a factory unit. I don't care for the way the newer units work and they'll look awful on the dash of an '81 Scrambler. The one I found was out of a 2003 Grand Am.  It is a Monsoon unit and should have some pretty good sound but I've been told that it won't even turn on unless the Grand Am is attached. Some kind of computer wake-up code or something. I've further found that there are some Ford units that will, but I'm not sure how to tell which ones.  As for the installation. I'm totally aware that this will be a custom, cut the dash, rewire from scratch kind of install. I'd like to use at least 6 speaker components and a Sub with amps to support that kind of install. I'm not new to this subject, please understand that I've had systems in vehicles that have rivaled most folks home stereos...that I have personnally installed. I'm just trying to find a source for good information on "Factory" head units and their interface to the car they came from. I need one that does not require the car's computer to operate. Thanks Chris Yerger

I have an Older CJ-8 that is totally rebuilt, next step stereo. I'd like to put in a "Factory Head Unit" of some type. I want the look and feel of Factory but don't want to sacrifice all the sound quality. I found some stuff from GM that is supposed to be pretty good but the GM products need to have a GM car attached to work or even turn on. I'd like CD, Cassette and XM radio from the same head unit. I know most of the units will not have the XM built in but quite a few will control them from the same face plate as the regular stuff. I think I can handle most of the wiring, I've done a couple of systems before but never anything with a factory unit. Thanks, Hope you can help. I'm running out of places to ask.

You need to acquire an 'aftermarket system', first of all.

But if, somehow, you can even find an old CJ-8 factory system with XM or CD... go for it.

Many aftermarket head units will fit if you use an installation kit for that vehicle.
If the vehicle wires have not been cut, obtain a factory wiring harness adaptor.
If they have been cut, you will need to install this from the ground up, manually wiring it.
The good part is that most of this can be found at walmart.

Answer
I been doing this for 18 years and would not even go that route (the 1st important thing I tell most ppl with factory units.. is to replace them) so as to what you are after, (outside of luck) you will likely need a willing local pro to really narrow that down AND wire it.
Insert Dollar signs.
I feel your pain, but I cannot go against every lesson I know for free.
Best of luck.
