I bought the car new; had no problems for years. Started getting grumbling/popping in the speakers, especially when driving over bumpy roads. Problem has gotten so severe that it is almost impossible to listen to radio or music. It is worse on the right side, but affects all speakers almost all the time. Is this an amplifier problem? Something tells me this is going to be costly to fix. Thanks for your help!

wiring, wiring, wiring... you need to check and make sure your stereo's grounded securely. also check connections at speakers and antenna if it's only during radio use and not tape or cd. other than that, best bet os letting car stereo shop take a look...

Thanks very much for your advice. I want to add a little bit more. After writing you yesterday, I checked again and noticed that the popping/crackling sound seems to be coming from the right front speaker. It is so loud that even if I shift the fader/balance totally to the left side, the noise still makes it difficult to hear the radio or tapes/cds. (Yes, it is not just the radio that is affected.)

I think I read somewhere that this Infinity system has per-amps or maybe separate amps in the doors or dashboard. Could that be the source of the problem?

You're right, I know I need to take the car to a car stereo shop. I just wanted to have as much information as possible and I am most grateful for your help.

Separate question about the website: When I sent in my first question, I would have been happy if it were posted on the website. Thus I left the "Private Question" box unchecked. Yet this still seems to have registered as a private question. I mention this because I did check the "Experts: Car Radio/Stereo System Repair" section as thoroughly as I could, hoping to find this question from someone else, before writing to you. I'm confused about how I am supposed to ask a question so it WILL get posted for others to see.

Finally, I want to thank you again. How neat that you provide this service.

Answer
well, if you can get access to back of stereo, you might check and make sure any rca connectors plug in tight. press the outer parts of connector inward a little to tighten them up. i'm also thinking that you have a simple blown speaker on right front. try swapping a speaker to prove/disprove this. thanks for the kind words, as far as how the site works, i just don't know.....garry.....
