Audio Systems: Chrysler/Infinity Sound System Problems, chrysler new yorker, infinity sound

Question
Dear Tim,

I currently own a 1989 Chrysler New Yorker with a Chrysler Infinity I Sound System. I have had problems with the two front speakers. It seems no matter what I do, they hiss and make a loud static sound noise (very irratically [there is typically no rhyme or reason as to when it does it, sometimes it won't at all, and then other times it wont stop]) , no matter what the stereo is doing (playing a cassette or listening to the radio) or even if I set the volume to "0" or the max, they still hiss (very loudly). I tried using the fader to send all of the signal to the rear speakers, which did not work, this hiss still remained. I thought it might be the actual stereo so I replaced it with a newer CD Player and am currently experiencing the same problem. Is this an electrical problem or do I need new speakers?

Thanks,

Adam

Answer
If your getting static with the volume turned all the way down, that makes me believe that there is a short in the speaker wire somewhere. You say its only with the front speakers? I would assume that the speaker wire has a nick in it somewhere. An easy test would be pull the radio out and run new wire form the HU straight to those 2 speakers and see if the problem is resolved.
