Audio Systems: unlocking radio, vin number, digit code

Question
I recently had to replace the battery on a 1997 Grand Prix. By disconnecting the power it activated the theft deterent loc on the radio. They want $40 to reset it. Can I reset it? If I have to get it reset how can I prevent it from locking up again should I have to disconnect the battery?

Answer
Dennis,
basically what the dealer is going to do is to use the model number and the VIN number for the vehicle to look up the unlock code. Once they have the code they will unlock the stereo and provide you the four digit code for future ref if you need it. There are several code providers on the internet also and they all charge about the same price for the unlock/access code.
