Audio Systems: Problems with Ford CD Changer, ford escort zx2, car stereo repair

Question
Hi, I have a Ford Escort ZX2 - with a factory in dash tape/radio deck and a factory 6-CD changer in the trunk (think it's a Clarion). When using the radio or tape form the in dash unit, the sound is greta. But when I play CD's there is a marked decrease in audio quality. It sounds a bit like the music is muffled. All the speakers work fine with the radio on. It just suddenly started happening. Could this be in need of re-wiring, or is the CD unit gone bad for some reason. It plays fine and never skips.

Thanks for listening!

Kevin

Answer
Kevin,
It's possible that the digital audio decoder circuits in the CD changer is failing. You may want to take your vehicle to a good car stereo repair shop to see if they can plug in a similar CD changer to see how it plays. This way you will at least know if the audio problem is with the CD changer or the stereo itself.
